What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Here are some common symptoms of oral cancer to keep an eye out for:

  • Trouble chewing or swallowing
  • A persistent sore throat
  • The sensation that something is always lodged in your throat
  • A lump or bump that’s only recently appeared
  • Any sores or lesions that haven’t healed within two weeks

It can be quite worrying if you notice any of these signs, but remember that there are many non-threatening conditions that look similar such as cold sores, so try not to panic.

By scheduling a visit with Dr. Patel to be looked at, we’ll either rule out oral cancer, ask you to return in two weeks for another look, or refer you to a specialist for further evaluation. Most importantly, you’ll know what’s happening with your oral health so you can take the necessary steps.

What Do We Look for During an Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screenings are potentially life-saving, so we take them very seriously. Both Dr. Patel and our hygienist will take the time to examine your mouth and throat at each visit.

We’ll be looking for any abnormal or suspicious tissues such as red or white lesions, or areas that have become thick or callous-like. We’ll also inspect the area around your lips, as this is a common spot for a type of skin cancer called melanoma.

What Is an Oral Cancer Screening Like?

With regular screenings and early detection, the survival rate for oral cancer is 85%-90%. Fortunately, getting an oral cancer screening is simple, fast, and non-invasive and takes just minutes. Here are the basic steps:

  • First, we’ll look at all of the soft tissues in your mouth and throat, including your lips, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth.
  • We may ask you to say, “Ahhh” so we can see the back of your throat more easily.
  • We’ll also look carefully at all the surfaces of your tongue, including underneath it and on both sides, as this is a common area for oral cancer.
  • Finally, we’ll gently press on the sides of your neck and underneath your jaw to feel for any lumps, bumps, or tender areas.

As a dentist in Woodstock, we’re so glad we can help our patients lead long, healthy lives with these simple screenings. You may have only thought of dental checkups as a way to keep your teeth and gums healthy, but the truth is that they’re so much more!
